Scroll Compressors:

  • The operating principle of a rotary scroll type compressor is accomplished by means of two intermeshing spirals or scrolls, one scroll being stationary and the other orbiting in relation to the stationary scroll. The stationary scroll is shown in blue and the orbiting scroll in brown. Air entering through the suction port in the stationary scroll, fills the suction chamber consisting of the outer labyrinth of the stationary scroll and on the outside edge of the orbiting scroll. At this position, the portion of the compression chamber at an intermediate pressure is sealed by adjacent portions of the two scrolls. As the orbiting continues, the space that is filled with air becomes progressively reduced then moving progressively towards the discharge port located in the center of the stationary scroll. The flow through the suction port and discharge port is continuous, which provides pulsation free delivery of compressed air to the system. There is no metal-to-metal contact between scrolls which eliminates any need for lubrications in the compression chamber. This ensures oil free air being delivered from the compressor.

Most Practical Application

  • Due to their unique properties, scroll air compressors have applications in a lot of very specific fields. Some examples where these types of compressors can be found are in dental surgical offices and hospitals, because in these types of environments, it is crucial to have completely oil-free air, which would not be possible if an oil-lubricated compressor was in use. Scroll compressors are also used in milk production by dairy farmers who value the low noise levels, which doesn't disturb their livestock. Overall, scroll air compressors are a great choice for anyone looking for a quiet, efficient compressor that is 100% oil free.
